Giving Yourself Credit

Hi everybody. Long time no write! Today I want to discuss giving yourself credit.

I don’t know about you, but I tend to sometimes focus on the negative over the positive. For example, today I wasn’t able to do something for as long as I would have liked due to my anxiety. I got upset with myself, but then I realized something – I almost didn’t try at all. That’s when it hit me – I needed to give myself the credit I deserved.

Sometimes when I get anxious right before doing things, I decide not to do them at all. This time, however, I told myself that I would be alright and I went for it. Yes, towards the end I began to struggle, and had to stop what I was doing. I admit, this did upset me and I’m still upset about it. However, I know that I could have decided to give into my fear right away and not even try to do what I needed to get done. And in the end? I did do what I needed to do, I just struggled more than I would have liked and let anxiety affect me more than I would have liked.

When anxiety kicks in and when it takes over, it’s easy to blame ourselves. It’s easy for us to feel depressed. Having anxiety though is not our fault. Sometimes anxiety is so strong that it does affect us and it does make us stop doing the things we want to do. However, sometimes we push through and even though we may struggle while pushing through or we may not do as well as we would have hoped, we still tried and we still fought a good and hard fight. That is what is important and that is something for which to give ourselves credit.

I want to also let you know that if you aren’t always able to do something because your anxiety holds you back, that’s okay. I’ve been there and sadly, I’ll likely be there again. Anxiety does not make things easy and that doesn’t mean that it’s stronger than you are or that you’re a failure. It simply means that anxiety is a strong feeling that can be hard to fight. It’s a nasty, cruel thing that will try to bring you down at any chance it gets. You are stronger than it though and the harder you try to not let it control you, you will get better and be able to win the battle that is so often fought between you and your fears.

So, give yourself the credit you deserve. Give yourself credit for never giving up even when anxiety tries to bring you down. Give yourself credit for trying to face your fears and stop anxiety in its tracks. Give yourself credit for standing up to your anxiety and letting it know who’s boss. Give yourself credit where and when credit is due. Don’t think that you don’t deserve to praise yourself just because anxiety sometimes takes hold or stops you from doing the things you want or love to do. Sometimes that might happen, that doesn’t make you weak or any less strong. It just means you struggle and that’s okay. Don’t give up, keep trying your best, and remember how truly amazing and strong you really are!
