Being proud of our progress is essential. Each time we succeed at facing our anxiety, we give ourselves reason to believe that we can get through our fears. While there may be times when others will recognize how well we do, there might not always be people other than ourselves telling us how proud they are of us or how they noticed an improvement in our behavior. Just as we have to be the ones to motivate ourselves (although others can help), we need to be the ones to tell ourselves what a great job we are doing when we are successful.
While perhaps slightly unfortunate, the fact that others sometimes do not mention how well we are doing or how proud of us they are, can be a good thing. It is true that it would be nice if everybody showed kindness, but sometimes others not mentioning our success reminds us of the fact that we have to remind ourselves; we have to depend on our own self-esteem.
As I’ve mentioned previously, it is okay and good to have people who support you. However, not everyone will be so helpful and in those situations, you have to be prepared to help yourself. One example of helping yourself is that when you have a good day, or even a good moment, you have to congratulate yourself, tell yourself how proud you are that you were successful! Telling yourself that you did a wonderful job and that you got through something is a great way to boost your self-confidence and show yourself that your anxiety does not have to control you! Be proud of your progress and remind yourself that you can get through your anxiety!
